The Land at Saraland Finally Finished. So Why Are Locals Still Walking at Amelia Park?

Ask someone who has lived here a while where they walked the dog this week, and there's a decent chance the answer isn't Celeste Road. It's still the paved loop at Amelia Park, past the playground, past the veterans memorial with the tank parked on the lawn, same as it's been for years. That contrast is worth noting: The Land and Amelia Park offer different kinds of recreation, and the details can help residents choose where to spend time.

What Actually Finished This Year

The Land at Saraland is a 100-acre complex off Celeste Road, on the west side of the city, and it took nearly two years to build in full. The indoor piece came first: a 78,000-square-foot fieldhouse that opened in November 2025, with basketball and volleyball courts, an indoor track, and the Fitness Den, the facility's full-service gym. The outdoor piece came last. This past February, the city opened the final three baseball and softball fields, completing an eight-field diamond complex with 16 batting cages, an entrance plaza, concessions, and restrooms.

Mayor Joe McDonald called it the completion of a vision the city had been building toward since groundbreaking. The completed complex also supports scheduled sports and recreation.

What the City's Announcement Says

The city's statement about the finished diamond complex describes the activities it will support:

This addition expands opportunities for local leagues, regional tournaments and year-round programming, bringing more athletes, families and visitors to Saraland.

The regional side of that programming is visible in the tournament calendar. Grand Slam Sports Tournaments lists The Land as an active tournament site, and this past June the complex hosted the 2026 Babe Ruth 7U Alabama State Tournament, a five-day event that brought district championship teams from around Alabama to Celeste Road, running from June 25 through June 29 under the organization of the Mobile Sports Authority. The tournament is one example of the complex's regional use.

None of that makes The Land less useful to the people who live here. It does mean the complex runs on two different rhythms, and knowing which one you've walked into changes what your visit actually looks like.

A Friday Morning Option

A recurring early-morning activity is available at The Land. Every Friday morning, the complex opens its pickleball courts before the rest of the day's programming kicks in. Rise & Rally runs from 7 to 9 a.m., open play, free to join, with coffee while it lasts. The format makes it a low-key way to try the courts.

Outside that window, most of what's inside carries a cost or a schedule. The Fitness Den is a membership gym, not an open drop-in space, outfitted with Matrix, True, Torque, TKO, Body Solid, and Spri equipment, the kind of buildout a serious lifter would recognize. The Climbing Den, the facility's rock wall, has run open hours in the afternoon on at least some days, based on the complex's own scheduling posts. Youth sports run on registration through the complex's Bond Sports system: a 1st through 3rd grade instructional volleyball league, and a 4th through 8th grade recreational league with Sunday evening practices, games on Mondays and Thursdays, ten regular season games, and an end of season tournament. These leagues offer structured programming rather than drop-in recreation.

Where Saraland Still Walks Every Day

Saraland's older parks offer a different kind of recreation from The Land. Amelia Park, at 716 Mae Street next to the Civic Center and Senior Center, has a paved walking trail, a playground, baseball diamonds, and that veterans memorial with the tank that regulars mention more than almost anything else about the place. Some visitors have noted that the tables and play equipment could use updates. The park also offers a setting for an unhurried evening walk with the dog.

For residents with a membership who want a court option without checking The Land's event calendar, the city's McArthur-McKinney Recreation Center at 405 Baldwin Road runs open gym Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with basketball, pickleball, and volleyball available to members on a shared-court basis. It's smaller than The Land and offers another option for residents looking to shoot around after work. Saraland maintains a dozen parks in total, and Amelia and McArthur-McKinney are simply the two that see the most everyday foot traffic from people who already live within walking distance.

The Same February, a Different Kind of Growth

The timing lines up in an interesting way. The same February The Land finished its diamond complex, Saraland got its first Chick-fil-A, opening February 12 at 1405-A Industrial Parkway under local owner-operator Holly Johnson, a milestone the company marked with a donation to Feeding America in the restaurant's name. The two February developments are different kinds of local growth: the sports complex hosts regional events, and the restaurant is a new local opening.

In everyday neighborhood life, some routines remain familiar. Aztecas Restaurant & Cantina still runs its weekly specials, discounted margaritas on Wednesdays, fajitas on Thursdays, the same way it has for a while. That's one picture of a Saraland week: dinner specials, a walk at Amelia, and a Friday morning option at a facility that also hosts regional tournaments.

The Take

The Land at Saraland is a genuine asset, and opening a 78,000-square-foot fieldhouse in November 2025 and finishing an eight-field diamond complex in February 2026 is not a small thing for a city this size. It supports regional tournaments as well as local recreation. Knowing its activities and schedules can help visitors plan a visit. Amelia Park and The Land offer different recreation options in Saraland, from neighborhood walks to organized sports.

Keeping track of details like these, which park does what job, which new opening changes the pattern of a week, is a big part of how The Cummings Company stays useful to people who already call Saraland home, not just people looking to move here.
